Belle Isle Viewing Room is pleased to present “Placid, Still & Eternal” a solo show of works by Amna Asghar. Edward Said states that the West depicts the Orient as “Placid, Still & Eternal,” a statement which influences Asghar to re-contextualize the Orient and create hybridity from her experience as a Pakistani Muslim American woman. The show features new paintings alongside research materials like cassette covers of Pakistani music, advertisements from Pakistani Reader’s Digest, and orientalist paintings from the likes of Jean-Léon Gérôme, all of which inform the visual aesthetic of Asghar’s work.
